Reading & Spelling

At Corpus Christi, our aim is that every child will learn to read, regardless of their background, needs or ability. Our children learn to read and write effectively and quickly using the Read Write Inc. Phonics programme.

Successful and effective teaching of phonics and early reading enables our children to form a firm foundation in literacy, from which they can develop excellent vocabulary and cultivate a love of reading that can last a lifetime. At Corpus Christi, we recognise that reading is part of the curriculum and a pathway to learning and accessing the rest of our broad and balanced curriculum; but in our school, it is also something that our children love.

Our children become successful readers thanks to the additional reading they do at home; using Read Write Inc. storybooks, Oxford Reading Tree books and individually selected books from the school library and class book corners. We encourage children to read widely and often with dedicated time for reading and listening to texts built into the school day.

SPARK! Book Awards 2022-23

Corpus Christi really enjoyed the third year of the SPARK! Book Awards.
We loved having a new book from Jenny Pearson & Sam Copeland - especially as Jenny has previously visited our school and some children saw both authors at the Barnes Children's Literature Festival.
We really enjoyed having poetry as the guest category this year - something for everyone! We may not have had any competition winners this year, but well done to Year 6 for their special mention!

Spark! Book Awards 2021-22

The children of Corpus Christi once again enjoyed participating in the SPARK! Book Awards for it's second year.
Our very own Reading Leader - Miss Quigley, advised on the shortlisting panel for the Age 6-11 Picture Book Category this year.
Our competition entires, from across the school, received special mentions - with particular praise being given to Reception and Year 4. Congratulations to Rose in Year 4 - winner of the Age 7-9 writing competition!

Spark! Book Awards 2020-21

A celebration of the first year of the Spark! Book Award by numbers!
The children of Corpus Christi really enjoyed participating in the 2020-21 awards and we were even honoured to have a competition winner - Congratulation to Jackson (Year 1) for his book review of 'Avocado Asks'.
